This is a paid review for the Blogher Book Club, but the opinions expressed are my own.
The Weird Sisters follows three sisters during a short period of time in their lives when, as adults they find themselves all living at home together with their father, who communicates mostly through Shakespearean quotes, and their cancer-stricken mother. It is a little confusing to read until you realize the book is written in first person plural, as though the sisters are telling the story together. The book bounces around and gives good perspective into each sister's situation, as well as the secrets she is hiding from the rest of the family. While completely entertaining, it reads much more like a memoir than a novel, in my opinion, which isn't necessarily a negative thing. Instead of their being one central problem and solution, there are many along the way, which definitely succeeds in keeping the reader's attention. I was drawn in immediately, never bored with it (except for the fact that I am not a fan of the Shakespearean language/quotes ... and there are many), and found myself considering the relationship between my own sister and I, and how alike or unlike we are to the sisters in the book.
